CYMRU X SUPPORTS PLAID CYMRU COUNCILLORS CALL FOR A YOUTH COMMISSION IN CARDIFF 20/09/05

Date: 20-September-2005

At the Cardiff City Council meeting this week, Plaid Cymru Councillors Gwenllian Lansdown and Delme Bowen will be calling for the establishment of a cross-party Youth Commission in Cardiff in order to tackle the disengagement of young people from society, and that will seek to provide facilities for young people so that they do not continue to feel dissafected:

Plaid Cymru Councillor Gwenllian Lansdown said:

‘We are presenting a motion at the Council meeting asking for the establishment of a Youth Commission to take evidence from those working with young people in the Council, the voluntary and charitable sectors, from young people and other interested parties, as a means of identifying areas of needs, and offer solutions to pro-actively deal with the problems facing young people in Cardiff. It is unacceptable that there is a significant lack of training, leisure, and social facilities for young people, and by setting up this Commission we hope to be able to encourage young people to take part and to realise that they can change the situation for the better’.

Bethan Jenkins, Youth Organiser for Cymru X added:

‘As a newly formed Youth Movement, Cymru X wholeheartedly supports the call for a cross party Youth Commission. Campaigning for a national structure of youth facilities and social activities for Wales is one of our key campaigns as a Movement. We must integrate young people in to our society as opposed to leaving them on the periphery. This motion is very positive, and I urge other Council’s to follow the good example of Cardiff’s Plaid Cymru Councillors in their quest  to regenerate society for the youth of today’.
